Mezcal - the Most Complex Spirit in the World

Mezcal is spiritual, cultural, and historic. Scientists date evidence of the first distillation back to Mesoamerican times. It is deeply woven into the fabric of Mexican culture. Mezcal is humble, rustic, brazen, fiery and romantic. It's used to celebrate the births of children, used to sanctify marriages and drink to commemorate the dead at funerals. It's used as medicine to heal the body and soul and consumed in rituals to symbolize fertility and the return of the rainy season.

“Para todo mal, mezcal, y para todo bien, también”

It's a phrase for celebration and commiseration translates to “For all evil, mezcal and for all good, too.” .

A Journey Through Complexity and Tradition

Everything about mezcal, Mexico's indigenous spirit, from the biological diversity of the agaves (thirty-three species) to the tiny differences in the way the liquor is made by the “Maestros mezcaleros” and the expressive flavors that result, provides mind-boggling nuances and complexity of the spirit.

Biology, rational facts, or history can’t explain Mezcal's dimensions. It is the overall sensory experience created and the emotions it evokes. It's a time, a place, and a memory. It's knowing you'll never know every little detail of the spirit.

Mezcal is made all over Mexico, and production methods and traditions differ within each region and state. The largest concentration of mezcal production is centered around the state of Oaxaca.
